At Unique Play, we don’t just create beautiful outdoor spaces, we transform them with purpose, detail, and a touch of individuality. A little while back, we had the pleasure of working with a

homeowner in Lymm to completely renovate their driveway. What began as a functional but dated space was transformed into a striking and practical entrance that elevated the property’s kerb appeal. Here's how we brought the vision to life, from concept to completion.

We began by stripping the area back to its foundations to create a clean slate for the new design. This involved removing the existing garden walls, their concrete footings, and the front lawn all carefully excavated down to the correct formation level. With the space cleared, we moved on to the essential groundwork preparation for the new driveway surface. The area, spanning approximately 90m², was excavated to a depth of 190mm to ensure the correct levels and foundation depth. We laid down Terram construction fabric across the entire area to provide a stable, long-lasting base and to help prevent weed growth. Following this, we imported and compacted high-quality MOT Type 1 stone, layer by layer, to create a solid and durable sub-base ready for the final surface installation.

Once the groundwork was in place, we turned our attention to the structural elements of the design. We set out fresh footings to support a more substantial and visually striking brick wall. With the foundations ready, we constructed a new brick wall complete with robust pillars and integrated up and down lighting, adding both visual interest and practical illumination to the entrance. This feature not only enhances the space at night but also highlights the quality of the brickwork, laying the groundwork (literally and visually) for the rest of the transformation to follow.

With the brickwork complete, we turned our attention to future-proofing the space by installing ducting for essential services. Carefully planned runs of ducting were laid beneath the driveway to accommodate power feeds for a new electric gate, an EV car charger, and garden lighting. Each duct included a drawcord, allowing easy cable installation later on without the need to disturb the finished surface. This stage was crucial for integrating modern functionality into the design, while keeping all services discreetly hidden from view and well protected underground.

With all services in place, we went on to add a touch of craftsmanship and natural character, we installed a series of bespoke oak sleeper features that added both form and function to the space. Two long oak planters were positioned to frame the driveway, each finished with a refined sill detail and integrated down-lighting that created a warm, ambient glow in the evenings while subtly illuminating the planting. We also incorporated an oak step with discreet side lighting, providing both a practical transition and a striking visual detail. Finally, a matching oak bin store was installed, a stylish and cohesive solution that keeps waste containers neatly tucked away while tying in seamlessly with the timber elements throughout the landscape. These features introduced warmth and texture to the setting, setting the stage for the final surfacing works that would complete the transformation.

To complete the project, we then began shaping the final surface of the driveway. A crisp, charcoal block border was installed first, running 90 metres around the perimeter to frame the space beautifully while retaining the Resin Bound Gravel finish. Once the edging was complete, a 50 mm porous tarmacadam sub-base was laid across the 90 m² area — a crucial structural layer providing both strength and permeability for effective drainage. The final touch was 90 m² of UV-stable Silver Resin Bound Gravel, producing a sleek, seamless finish that’s as durable as it is visually striking. The result is a modern, low-maintenance driveway that complements the property and significantly enhances its kerb appeal.

This project in Lymm is a great example of how thoughtful design, quality materials, and attention to detail can completely transform an outdoor space. From the structural groundwork and modern surface finishes to the bespoke oak features and integrated lighting, every element was carefully considered to enhance both the functionality and appearance of the property. The result is a driveway that not only serves its purpose but also adds real character and value to the home, a space that’s built to last and designed to impress.
