Mayfield School came to us with the hopes of completely revamping their main play area, seeking a fresh and exciting space for their students. We took on the challenge and crafted a bold new vision that would transform the area into an inclusive, vibrant playground where every child could play and thrive.
The first major step in transforming Mayfield School's main play area was the installation of a 10m x 4m Multi-Wall Finished Canopy. This canopy was designed not just as a functional addition but as a key feature to enhance the space. We chose this structure to provide a sheltered area that could be used year-round, protecting students from the elements and creating a versatile space for various activities. Its sleek, modern design and durable materials ensure it’s not only practical but also visually striking, offering both shade and protection while blending seamlessly with the rest of the play area.

Next, we installed eight bespoke Sensory Archways, each crafted with a sturdy timber framework and designed to engage children’s senses in a unique way. These archways were carefully engineered to stimulate sight, touch, and even sound, offering an interactive experience for every child. Each tunnel features translucent coloured perspex panels, creating a mesmerizing visual effect as light filters through and projects onto the floor. Mirror panel inserts add a playful reflective element, while the artificial grass backing provides a soft, tactile surface. To further enhance the sensory experience, we incorporated colour-projecting sensory circles, which bring an added layer of excitement and wonder to the play area. These archways not only create an immersive sensory journey but also foster creativity and imaginative play.
The next features the team installed were custom-made Hip Height Sand & Water Play units, specifically designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. These bespoke units allow all children, regardless of mobility, to engage in interactive play, encouraging sensory exploration and group activities. Its height and design ensure that children in wheelchairs can comfortably access and enjoy the play experience alongside their peers. In addition to this, we incorporated a Square PlayGrade Timber Sleeper Planter measuring 950mm x 950mm x 585mm, which was placed nearby to add a touch of nature to the space. The planter not only enhances the overall aesthetic of the play area but also invites children to engage with the environment by planting and caring for greenery, promoting a sense of responsibility and connection to nature.
As part of the playground's transformation, we installed three swings, each designed to accommodate different needs and ensure inclusivity. Before installing the swings, the team began by preparing the areas thoroughly to ensure a smooth and level foundation. This involved excavating the designated spaces, regrading the ground with topsoil, and laying down fresh turf to create a natural, even surface. To enhance the durability of the play area, we also supplied and installed ground stabilising mesh, which provides additional support and prevents shifting. Finally, we laid Safety Grass Mat surfacing to ensure the swings' areas met the highest safety standards. A group swing and a double cradle swing were placed together in a shared area, allowing multiple children to enjoy playtime together. The group swing encourages cooperative play, while the double cradle swing offers a safe and comfortable experience for younger children. To ensure accessibility for all, we also installed a wheelchair-accessible swing in its own designated area. This area was carefully sectioned off using robust, high-quality chunky redwood timber fencing, which provides both safety and durability. The same redwood fencing was also used around the swing area for the group and cradle swings, creating a cohesive look while keeping the space secure and well-defined.
To further enhance the play experience, we installed three engaging play panels that provide both entertainment and learning opportunities. The first panel was a Giant 4 in a Row play panel, featuring 48 movable red and yellow sliding discs, offering children a fun, interactive game that encourages teamwork and strategic thinking. Next, we installed a Tic Tac Toe play panel, a classic favorite with large, easy-to-hold spinners, making it accessible and enjoyable for children of all ages. The third panel was the Rain Wheel, a unique sensory feature that incorporates mesh and ball bearings, creating soothing rain-like sounds or maraca-like shakes as children spin it. These play panels not only add variety to the play area but also promote social interaction, cognitive development, and sensory exploration, making them valuable additions to Mayfield School's newly transformed playground.
Working with Mayfield School on this project has been a fantastic experience. Their clear vision for an inclusive and vibrant play area made collaboration easy and rewarding. The team was engaged and open to ideas, ensuring that every detail aligned with their goal of creating a space where all students could play and grow together. We're proud of the final result and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such an impactful project.
