Redeveloping the Main Play Area at Dallas Road Primary School

When Dallas Road Primary School reached out to us with a vision for a dynamic and engaging play area, we were excited to turn their ideas into a vibrant, safe space where students could learn, grow, and play.

At the start of the project, we began by removing all the existing planters and unwanted play equipment from the site. Our team worked efficiently to clear the area, carefully dismantling and hauling away each item to make way for the new design. From uprooting old planters to removing outdated play structures, we ensured every aspect of the removal process was done with precision and care. Once the site was cleared, we were ready to move forward and transform the space into a dynamic playground that would serve the students of Dallas Road Primary School.

With the foundation set, the next step was to install the Timber Gazebo, a central feature of the new playground design. This thoughtfully designed Gazebo featured half sides, offering both a sense of openness and shelter, making it an ideal spot for outdoor activities. Inside, we incorporated built-in seating that could comfortably accommodate around 20 children, creating a versatile space for group discussions, quiet reading, or socializing. The Timber Gazebo not only enhanced the aesthetic of the playground but also provided a practical, inviting area that would quickly become a favorite gathering spot for the students at Dallas Road Primary School. As the finishing touch to this area we lay a vibrant blue wetpour surface that covered the floor of the gazebo and the surrounding area, creating a smooth, durable, and visually appealing finish.

To further enhance the safety and functionality of the playground, we installed two sections of fencing with double gates, ensuring secure access while maintaining an open, welcoming feel. The fencing was crafted from heavy-duty redwood rails and pales, known for their strength and durability, providing both a robust barrier and an attractive natural finish that complemented the overall design. The dual pale fencing not only defined the play area but also added a rustic charm to the space. The gates were fitted with self-closing hinges and Pro-Safe gate latches, designed to ensure that the gates remained securely closed while offering a reliable and user-friendly entry and exit point. Additionally, we installed three sections of raised sleeper retaining walls, made from sturdy timber sleepers ranging in height from 0.8m to 1.2m. This combination of safety features and high-quality materials guaranteed a secure and well-maintained environment for the students to enjoy.

We then introduced an exciting and interactive element to the playground by installing green rock climbing grips onto the taller section of the sleeper wall, transforming it into a 5-meter traverse wall. This challenging feature was designed to encourage physical activity, coordination, and problem-solving skills, offering students a fun and safe way to test their climbing abilities. To further enhance the play experience, we also installed an interchangeable water wall onto the retaining wall. This feature allows children to manipulate various water channels and components, fostering creativity and learning through sensory play. The combination of the rock climbing traverse wall and water wall brought a dynamic and engaging aspect to the playground, offering both physical and educational benefits for the students at Dallas Road Primary School.

Next, the team installed a chalkboard stage, featuring a sleek single-tier timber stage with a spacious chalkboard backing. This versatile addition provides an excellent space for performances, presentations, and creative expression. The chalkboard surface invites children to draw, write, and engage with the space in imaginative ways, making it a dynamic spot for both educational and artistic activities. Perfect for school events or spontaneous performances, this feature enhances the playground by encouraging creativity and interactive learning.

Another addition to the playground was the installation of the mud kitchen, a wonderful addition that sparks role play, creativity, and imagination in children. This mud kitchen provides a hands-on environment where children can engage in open-ended play, which is crucial for their development. It not only encourages imaginative scenarios but also teaches valuable life skills, such as the basics of cooking, organization, and sharing. With several engaging components, including a functional sink, cupboard, cooker, and utensil holders, the mud kitchen provides endless opportunities for children to explore and interact with. This unique feature promotes both independent and collaborative play, ensuring that kids can develop social skills while learning through play.

To complete the project, we laid a high-quality artificial grass surface in a designated area, creating a soft and durable space for play and relaxation. The lush green surface provides a comfortable and low-maintenance area for students to enjoy outdoor activities. Additionally, we applied a thermoplastic roadway to another nearby section, complete with two zebra crossings and two traffic lights. This playful yet educational feature allows children to engage in imaginative role-playing as they navigate the “road,” helping them learn about road safety in a fun and immersive way.

The playground transformation at Dallas Road Primary School has created a vibrant and engaging space where students can learn, play, and explore. From the removal of old equipment to the installation of new, exciting features each element was carefully designed to enhance both the educational and recreational experience. With a focus on creativity, safety, and fun, this project has not only refreshed the play area but has also provided the school community with a dynamic environment for children to grow, learn, and create lasting memories. We are proud to have been part of this exciting transformation and are eager to see how the students continue to enjoy the playground for many years ahead.
